Course Description

"Management and Communication in Museums" at HTW Berlin is the only M.A. programme of its kind that teaches the necessary skills to understand the complex and changing museum world. Our students learn the organization and communication strategies needed to mediate between the diverse interests of the public, science, administration and the economy. The course is designed to extend leadership, organizational, marketing or communication skills that go beyond the basis of HTW´s Museology B.A. course. To ensure a maximum of practical experience, we work together with museums and cultural institutions in Berlin which offers the opportunity to make our students' creative concepts come to life.

Available majors are in Museum Management and Museum Communication. This enables our students to take over controlling and management or the curatorship of communication strategies in modern institutions.

In the first and second semesters, they gain insight into the fundamental communication and management theories as well as the arising ethical questions in museums, multimedia, finance, controlling, marketing and audience development. The first placement  project in which they develop management or communication strategies starts then as well. Further emphasis is put on diversity and museum, staff management, financing cultural facilities and projects as well as on corporate communication such as the corporate identity and image. A thesis is written in the fourth semester.

The course can also be absolved as a double degree in cooperation with the Burgundy School of business. More information here.
